Next up on the Eastern Range: SpaceX Falcon 9 with Dragon to ISS

If schedules hold, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is likely to end the Eastern Range's launch hiatus next month.

SpaceX and NASA are targeting no earlier than August 14 for the launch of a Dragon spacecraft packed with supplies and cargo for the International Space Station. Kennedy Space Center's pad 39A will play host to the launch attempt.

A landing of the rocket's first stage at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station's Landing Zone 1 is expected shortly after liftoff.

SpaceX’s twelfth mission under NASA’s Commercial Resupply Services contract, labeled CRS-12, will take thousands of pounds of cargo and several science experiments to astronauts and cosmonauts on the station. Among them, the Cosmic Ray Energetics and Mass, or CREAM, experiment will attempt to understand the makeup of cosmic rays, or streams of energy from outer space.

August has seen a shifting launch schedule – the launch of NASA's newest Tracking and Data Relay Satellite, known as TDRS-M, was delayed due to a crane operation causing damage to an antenna in mid July. Originally scheduled for August 3, that launch was recently pushed back to August 20. Teams at Astrotech Space Operations in Titusville were expected to replace the antenna soon, according to a NASA official.

The last launch from the Eastern Range – a SpaceX Falcon 9 with the Intelsat 35e communications satellite – occurred on July 5. At least a portion of the nearly month-and-a-half gap between launches can be attributed to routine maintenance at Eastern Range launch sites.
