Geminid meteor shower 2019: Best times, locations to see shooting stars tonight - AL.com

One of the best meteor showers of the year will light up the night sky tonight.

The annual Geminid meteor shower will peak Friday night into Saturday morning. The Geminids typically deliver one of the best shooting star shows of the year, producing up to 50 bright, colorful meteors per hour.

While you can see meteors throughout the night, the show will peak around 2 a.m. local time. The shower’s radiant point is the star Castor in the constellation Gemini, though the shooting stars will be visible throughout the sky.

According to NASA, the Geminids are active every December when Earth passes through a massive trail of dusty debris shed by rocky object named 3200 Phaethon. The dust and grit produced by Phaethon burn up when they run into the Earth’s atmosphere to produce a flurry of shooting stars.

The exact nature of Phaethon isn’t known. NASA said it’s either a near-Earth asteroid or an extinct comet, sometimes called a rock comet. The Geminids first began appearing in the mid-1800s but were less impressive, producing only 10 to 20 meteors per hour. Since that time, the showers have grown, lighting up the sky with as many as 120 meteors per hour on a good year.

Best ways to see Geminids

To view the Geminids, find a spot well away from city or street lights. It’s December, so come prepared for the cold. Lie flat on your back with you feet facing south and look up, taking in as much of the sky as possible. Give your eyes about 30 minutes to adapt to the dark.
