Meteor Outburst Tonight - WJHG-TV

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WJHG) - Coming up tonight will be the opportunity to see the rare Alpha Monocerotid meteor shower that COULD produce as many as 400 meteors/hr. Unlike most showers though this one will be brief... lasting as little as 30-40 minutes.

According to Sky and Telescope Magazine, 'the source of the Alpha Monocerotids is unknown, but the stream's orbital characteristics point to a long-period comet with a period of about 500 years. This nameless visitor deposited a dense, narrow ribbon of debris in the distant past with a half-width of only around 55,000 kilometers, equal to the distance from the center of Earth to the geostationary satellite belt.'

The shower will peak around 10:50pm CT in our area. To see it get outside around 10:15pm. The radiant for the shower will rise around 10pm in the east/southeast sky pretty low to the horizon.

Right now the hope is that the clouds stay out of our area giving us a good opportunity to see them.
