Edison students witness Orion's arrival - Sandusky Register

MILAN — Edison elementary students were over the moon with excitement as they watched the future of space exploration travel by their school.

The Orion spacecraft is a major component of a NASA initiative to travel into deep space. Edison Elementary School took its students outside Tuesday to watch the spacecraft travel on Main Street (Ohio 601) in Milan on its way to NASA's Plum Brook Station.

“This is a historic, once-in-a-lifetime event,” Edison principal Davy Hermes said. “Giving our students the chance to experience something like this was important to do.”

Hundreds of students, ranging from preschoolers to third graders, lined the sidewalk outside the school. They waved and cheered at the space ship.

Many of the students were astounded that the space vehicle in front of them would one day take astronauts beyond the current limits of space exploration.

“It’s so cool,” kindergartener Owen Traut said. “I want to see it again.”

He was interested in knowing more about the vessel, including where the rocket was and why it didn’t just fly itself to NASA.

The elementary students were not the only ones who were captivated by the spacecraft. Village residents stood in front of their homes to see Orion.

Bystanders watched, took photos and recorded video of Orion all along its path through the village and Milan Township.

People parked their cars near the intersection of Mason and Milan roads to watch it make the final leg of its journey before it undergoes testing at NASA Plum Brook.
